Luka Modric has been a massive disappointment since his high-profile transfer to Tottenham. After a good European Championship he has looked a shadow of the played many thought would help shoot Spurs into the top four. Lightweight, sluggish and slow to track back, he was not a good player to have when the North Londoners were struggling to win a point, let alone a game.
However, since Harry Redknapp's arrival he is a player reborn. Whether he was lacking match fitness until now, or he simply found it hard to adjust to the hustle and bustle of English football, it is clear he is now finding his feet. Gradually people are understanding see why Damien Comolli forked out almost £17m on the 23-year-old Croatian.
Modric is a midfielder akin to Paul Scholes or Deco, who loves to dictate the play and create opportunites for others. In Tottenham's first six or seven games it would be hard to see any of these three players doing well in a side who found it hard to string half a dozen passes together. Playmakers require players around them to make good runs, but these runs were not evident.
For a flair player such as Modric it is important for the team to be functionning as a whole, and this includes a holding midfielder or two to act as ball-winners. Arguably Tottenham's best player in the first five or six games of the season, Didier Zokora made surging runs forwards but often lacked the discipline required to help out his more creative players. Redknapp seems to be favouring Young English midfielder Tom Huddlestone for this role, who is more of a Michael Carrick-style defensive midfielder who likes to intecept and pick out a pass, short or long. He does most of his good work in his own half, enabling Players like David Bentley, Modric and Jermaine Jenas to penetrate the opposition's defence. Although there is no doubting Zokora is a good player, it seems as though Huddlestone may work better for the team.
I may eat my words, but I would put money on Modric coming good sooner rather than later. As long as the Tottenham revival continues, he will be the one pulling the strings and helping them surge up the table. We have yet to see the best of a player dubbed the Croation Cruyff.
