With league results showing no sign of improvement any time soon, the Tottenham board could panic and send boss Juande Ramos packing after only a year at the helm.
As everyone realises impressive pre-season results doesn’t assure a club of starting a season on fire but in the Lilywhites case the comparison has been night and day.
The team looked strong and played with a flair during matches against Celtic and Borussia Dortmund in a victorious warm-up tournament in Holland.
The new signings including David Bentley, Giovani Dos Santos, Heurelho Gomes. and Luka Modric all seemed to be settling in well and linked up effectively together.
In stark contrast since the opening day defeat at Middlesbrough the whole club from the board downwards has gone on a alarming slide which must be halted and quick before its too late.
Chairman Daniel Levy and Director of Football Damien Comoli went through a very long process in bringing Spaniard Ramos to White Hart Lane and in doing so going behind former boss Martin Jol’s back.
Dutchman Jol now casting a glance across North London, from the top of the Bundesliga at Hamburg, has his damaged reputation restored after his untimely exit from the club.
He did a terrific job in guiding Spurs to two consecutive fifth place finishes which is the highest ever position in the Premier League the Lilywhites have achieved.
A poor start to last season saw him ousted but comparing it to this campaign’s beginning Jol would still be in a job with the patience currently being given to Ramos.
If the manager is changed again then he will want to bring in his own players during January and may not rate the new recruits who arrived in the summer.
This would cause further upheaval and with the departures of the trio of strikers which put Spurs in with a chance of Champions League qualification all leaving, sacking the boss may not help matters either.
Any club would suffer hugely if no replacements were in place following the exits of regular goalscorers Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov.
That was evident even at the Champions League winners Manchester United who without their star man Ronaldo in the starting eleven looked a different side before his return from injury.
All the responsibility of netting the goals to kick start Spurs season rests on a out of form Darren Bent, youngster Frazier Campbell and new signing Roman Pavlyuchenko.
All three look to be struggling with the expectation and pressure caused by the dismal start in the league which is now the worst start in the club’s history going back to 1912.
Hopefully the next match, which won’t be easy, up against another promoted team in Stoke City away will bring three much needed points to the Lane.
