Walter Zenga makes an emotional return to the San Siro with Catania, AC Milan’s woes continue as they suffer a second successive Serie A defeat, whilst last season’s runners-up Roma are on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline in Palermo and their great rivals Lazio continue their fine start to the new campaign.

Following the opening round defeat to Bologna at the San Siro, Milan hoped to get off the mark with a visit to a ground which is usually a source of some luck. And with Kaka returning to the side to link up with Ronaldinho and Andrei Shevchenko, optimism was high. However, Giuseppe Sculli gave Genoa the lead on the half hour mark, and Diego Milito, making his comeback for the Grifone three years after leaving for Real Zaragoza, converted a last minute penalty after he was tripped by Paolo Maldini.

Fortunately for the Rossoneri they are not the only side to have lost both of their opening two games, as Cagliari suffered a 2-0 defeat at Siena. In a meeting between two top-flight new boys at the Stadio Via del Mare, Lecce got off the mark to beat Chievo 2-0. And the fourth game of week two to finish 2-0 to the home side came in Rome, where Lazio continued their fine start to the season with a defeat of Sampdoria, in which Mauro Zarate and Goran Pandev were on target again.

Joining Lazio in making a perfect start to the season are Atalanta. The Orobici finished ninth in Serie A last season, and got off to a winning start this with an opening win over Siena by a single goal. And it was the same again as they took on Bologna, who couldn’t repeat last week’s surprise win at Milan and fell to a Tiberio Guarente goal on nine minutes.

Jose Mourinho recorded his first victory as Inter Milan coach on Saturday, when his side came from behind to beat Catania at the San Siro. Ricardo Quaresma scored a debut goal and the three points were secured when Cristian Terlizzi put through his own net. It wasn’t all good news for the champions, though, as summer signing Sulley Muntari was sent off shortly before the break. Patrick Viera and Marco Materazzi were restored to the Nerazzurri following injury spells, but the biggest reception was reserved for visiting coach Walter Zenga who made 473 appearances for Inter and was presented with a shirt with said number printed on, whilst fans unfurled a banner which read ‘WZ1 – we don’t forget our heroes’.

The first game of the weekend came at the Stadio Renzo Barbera where Palermo hosted last season’s runners-up Roma, and it looked like being a happy day for the visitors when Julio Baptista fired them into an early lead with his first goal for his new club. But Fabrizio Miccoli drew the Rosanero level before the 20-minute mark, and he then added another just before the hour. Edison Cavani secured the points on 73 minutes, making it a happy debut for Davide Ballardini who replaced Stefano Colantuono after just one week following a 3-1 opening day defeat to Udinese.

Elsewhere, Juventus notched their first win of the season with a 1-0 triumph over Udinese, with summer signing Amauri grabbing the only goal of the game; Adrian Mutu was on target for Fiorentina but he couldn’t prevent the Viola going down 2-1 at Napoli, continuing their fine run at the Sao Paolo which has seen them undefeated in seven games; and Nicola Amoruso made a scoring return to former club Reggina, but Torino could only manage a 1-1 draw.

RESULTS: Bologna 0-1 Atalanta; Inter Milan 3-1 Catania; Genoa 2-0 AC Milan; Juventus 1-0 Udinese; Lazio 2-0 Sampdoria; Lecce 2-0 Chievo; Napoli 2-1 Fiorentina; Palermo 3-1 Roma; Reggina 1-1 Torino; Siena 2-0 Cagliari
