It doesn’t qualify as one of the biggest monetary signings of the summer, but Mikael Silvestre’s move to Arsenal from Manchester United is certainly up there with the more surprising.
The 31-year-old French defender has penned a two-year deal with the Gunners, ending a nine-year association at Old Trafford which has seen him win four Premier League’s, a UEFA Champions League, an FA Cup and a League Cup without ever really being considered a regular starter.
In moving from the Red half of Manchester to the Red half of North London he becomes the first player to do so since Brian Kidd back in 1974. It is believed the Emirates Stadium club have paid £750,000 for Silvestre, who is relishing the task of winning a place in Arsene Wenger’s side.
"I've spent a large part of my career at United, the last nine years, and I'll remember that time fondly, but feel I'm ready for a new challenge. Arsenal is known for playing technical and skilful football, and has a young but experienced squad. I'm really excited about this next stage of my career," he said.
So is this another shrewd signing from Wenger, or has he let leave of his senses on this one? Considering the experience Silvestre has the fact he didn’t cost a great deal, it would appear as though his signing is a gamble well worth taking. And if he can add another honour to his time in England before hanging up his boots, the transfer may also be a source of regret to Sir Alex Ferguson.
