Whether Gareth Barry eventually moves to Liverpool or not, one thing you can say for certain is that he doesn't look like a player who's just hanging on a move away.
Against Man City, there was no complacency, no lack of determination, and no lack of enthusiasm or quality. It was, for all intents and purposes, the same Gareth Barry that Villa had last season, and that certainly says something for the man.
Considering that his future is still uncertain, and given the fact that he didn't even look likely to still be at Villa come the start of the season, you might forgive him for being unfocused. Even if he still wants a move to Liverpool, he's still being a consummate professional for Villa, and that's impressive in itself.
A cross for Agbonlahor's 2nd goal and a pass for his 3rd goal meant that Barry was as integral to Villa's 4-2 victory of Man City as anyone on the park. Man City did well under the circumstances, especially given that Valeri Bojinov, who hasn't played for City in over a year, managed to injure himself in the warm-up, and will be out for another 6 months.
It's hard to know whether to feel more sorry for Bojinov or Man City. When things go wrong, they really go wrong. In their next match, I wouldn't be surprised if one of Man City's players got struck by lightning, and another managed to twist his ankle by slipping on a pool of urine in the toilets. That, sadly, is just how things are going for Man City at the moment.
In contrast to Gareth Barry, Berbatov looks like a player who can't wait to move. The fact that a player who has been so integral to Tottenham started on the bench says a lot, especially given the fact that dos Santos is such a young and inexperienced player. There's no doubt that if Berbatov were fit and his head was still at White Hart Lane, he would have started.
Berbatov will probably feel slightly smug about the fact that Darren Bent looked slightly isolated up front, despite the fact that Bentley, Lennon and dos Santos were all playing off him.
Tottenham need to let Berbatov go, as his heart's clearly not in it. The fact that he started on the bench means that he's clearly in a very different state of mind to Gareth Barry.
And as much as Tottenham need to let Berbatov go, Man United need to sign him. Given that Ronaldo is out for 6 more weeks, that Tevez is currently away, and that Rooney isn't firing on all cylinders, Man United look to be lacking a bit of bite in attack. They can't afford to leave it all to an ageing Giggs and Scholes, however good they've been in the past.
Of course it's still early doors, and Man United's start last season was hardly brilliant and yet they still managed to win 2 trophies, but they will want to sort out their attacking situation sooner rather than later. Ronaldo makes them a different team, and Berbatov would definitely give them something extra. After Saturday, it looks very unlikely that Berbatov will be at Tottenham for much longer.
