Arsenal have finally completed the signing of Samir Nasri for an undisclosed fee, although the 'new Zinedine Zidane' will have to go some way to live up to his namesake.
Arsene Wenger has described the player as 'young, quick and technically outstanding,' which is hardly surprising, given that they're pretty much the sole criteria for any player that Wenger signs. Apart from Philippe Senderos and Pascal Cygan, who actually moved slower than the grass growing under his feet. There are fat people with 18 stone tumours on their stomachs who can crab walk faster than Pascal Cygan can sprint.
As a young player, particularly a French one, there can't be many more appealing managers to work for than Arsene Wenger. Not only does he have an unrivalled ability to recognise talent, but he's incredibly good at nurturing talent once he has it. A player like Walcott isn't developing quite as quickly as a lot of people would like, but he still has undoubted moments of brilliance. And hey, Arsenal's reserve (aka Carling Cup) team isn't damned bad either, even though they struggle with matches with late kick-offs as it's past their bedtime.
I think, like other Wenger buys, £12 million could prove to be a steal. Wenger won't rush Nasri into the 1st team if he's not ready, and if he doesn't, people will know not to worry. If Wenger's keeping him back, it's for a reason. Other managers will stick new players into their starting line-ups straight away and see how they do, but that's not always the best policy.
Having said that, if Hleb leaves, and given that Flamini has left already, Wenger might have to rush him into his starting line-up slightly more quickly than he would've done otherwise.
There's also the worry over whether or not Nasri will be able to cope with the physical side of English football. If there's one weakness you could level at Wenger's players, it's that they're often so unsteady on their feet that the air generated by whistles from the crowd can occasionally knock them over. Maybe it's because they're so young that they haven't learnt to walk properly yet.
Sure you can say that Wenger doesn't ever invest in English players, but then again, as a manager who values technical ability so much, is it really surprising? Rather than paying hefty fees for overpaid and often overvalued English players, Wenger looks to other leagues, pays reasonable transfer fees and reasonable wages.
Admittedly Wenger has a tendency to buy French (or French-speaking) players, but he's a Frenchman, so what do you expect? Personally, I've never been one to criticise Arsenal for their lack of Englishmen. After all, the lack of talented English players isn't Arsenal's fault, to be honest.
Is Nasri a good signing for Arsenal? Who else do they need to bring in to make them more competitive next season? Do they need to bring in at least one experienced player, just to prevent lulls in form and a few displays of inexperience which ultimately cost them last season? Will they bring in a new goalie, or is Fabianski ready to start playing more games?
